Resetting the 900 Series HP Printer's Ink Level For a Recycled Cartridge.

The 900 Series Printers have the ability to "remember" information from a cartridge. This is HP's way of trying to prevent you from recycling the cartridges. The problem arises when you recycle a cartridge, place it in the printer for testing and receive a "Low Ink" warning. The "Warning" does not prevent the use of the cartridge, however, the low ink warning can be an irritation. Below we have listed some ways we have received from customers to remove the warning.

#1. The printer has a limited memory. It only remembers 2 cartridges worth of information. The easiest method would be to have 3 cartridges. Number them 1 to 3. When #1 runs out of ink, recycle it then, as recommended, but place #2 in the printer. Do the same when #2 runs low, but replace it with #3. When #3 runs out, the printer will not remember #1, so it will think #1 is a new cartridge. We are attempting to experiment using old, unusable cartridges for #2, and #3 to see if we can use them to remove the memory of #1. This might be very useful for folks who use very little ink, and don't wish to have 3 full cartridges sitting on a shelf. If you have experience with this, please let us know.

#2 has to do with using the same cartridge, but disguising it twice before placing it back into the printer. It is important to recycle the cartridge prior to placing it in the printer. In a nutshell, you place tape over some of the contacts, place the cartridge in the printer. The printer thinks it is new, and records new information. You then place tape over other contacts and do the same thing. Following this, the memory of the original cartridge has been removed, so you remove the tape and place the cartridge back into the printer.

Be certain to refill the cartridge and test it in the printer - ignoring any low ink message. Then go to these directions.

In the diagram on the left, I have marked the contacts you need to tape over to convince the printer that you have inserted a new cartridge. After taping the contacts, place the cartridge in the printer and close the door as if you were intending to use the cartridge. Ignore any error messages you may receive. Let the cartridge park to the right. Wait 5 seconds. Remove the cartridge. Remove the tape

Follow the same directions, and tape over the opposite 4 contacts. Insert the cartridge as if to print. Ignore any error messages you receive. Let the cartridge park to the right. Wait 5 seconds. When completed, Remove the tape. Clean the contacts carefully with our Alcohol pads. Re-insert the cartridge and use as normal.
